In port, La Rochelle, France.

From the journal of Izaak de la Rey

Before setting off aboard the fluyt Zangvogel, commanded by Captain Sebastiaan Ketter bound for the West Indies, we Companions sampled the fare of several of this port’s less fine dockside establishments.

Returning to our vessel at evening’s end, we were beset by a villainous band of ruffians set upon pressing us into a crew. Outnumbered and desperate, I’m afraid I and my Companions escalated the confrontation quickly, quickly felling the lot of them with our blades and their own firearms.

We departed the scene hastily, hoping to be out on the first tide before the Gendarmes disturb us.

Plunder:

  • 4 flintlock pistols (poor quality, -1 acc)
    • estimated value 4 × 20$ x 25% fence = 20$
  • 4 small swords
    • estimated value 4 × 8$ x 25% fence = 8$
  • decent crossbow
    • estimated value 60$ x 25% fence = 15$
  • silver ring with a piece of jet
    • estimated value 12$ x 25% fence = 3$
  • 5 gold doubloons (100$)
  • 12 pieces of eight (12$)
    • already cash, but I’m a bit hazy on the currency
      Total plunder: 157$ / 4 shares = 39$ / share
      Default: 39$ cash
      Share 1: 2 pistols (10$) + 29$ cash
      Share 2: crossbow (15$) + 24$ cash
      Share 3: silver ring (3$) + 37$ cash
Various other possibilities exist, but we only got one crossbow and ring…
